Established in 1871 as a schoolhouse in the Russell's Mills section of Dartmouth, Massachusetts it further incorporated the Town library in 1895 primarily for the use of the students in the school. William Emerson, father of minister William Emerson and grandfather of transcendentalist writer and lecturer Ralph Waldo Emerson. n 1842, the American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne rented the Old Manse for $100 a year. The Old Manse The house is located on Monument Street, with the Concord River just behind it. The property neighbors the North Bridge, a part of Minute Man National Historical Park. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 and is open to the public as a nonprofit museum.

It was moved from its original location in Wright County along the Crow River, to Temperance Corner in Cokato and restored in 1999.  It sits on the site of a previous country school that burned down.

This unique church  is a two-story wood-frame structure with sixteen sides, finished with wooden clapboards and modest Federal period styling.
