Caltha palustris, commonly called Marsh marigold, is a rhizomatous perennial of the Buttercup family that is native to stream margins, marshes, swamps and wet meadows. The common name, marsh marigold, is only descriptively accurate as to this plantā€™s habitat, because it neither looks like, nor is related to, marigolds, which is Aster family. It typically grows 12-18ā€ tall on hollow, branching stems. Bright yellow flowers with 5-9 deep yellow petal-like sepals bloom in winter and spring (February to June).
