High on a sunlit tree trunk, a family of Crimson-crested Woodpeckers gathers at their nest cavity, a lively splash of red, black, and ivory against the forest green. The adults—bold and striking with their blazing scarlet crests—take turns clinging to the bark, their strong bills chiseled by nature for hammering into wood.
