High on a sunlit tree trunk, a family of Crimson-crested Woodpeckers gathers at their nest cavity, a lively splash of red, black, and ivory against the forest green. The adults—bold and striking with their blazing scarlet crests—take turns clinging to the bark, their strong bills chiseled by nature for hammering into wood. Native to tropical forests and open woodlands from Panama through much of South America, the Crimson-crested Woodpecker is known for its powerful drumming and commanding presence.
