Female red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) on ground in winter, searching for food. The feathers on a red-tailed hawk’s upper leg can be hard to see. They’re obvious here because the hawk was walking. Note the bare lower leg. The rough-legged hawk, in contrast, is feathered all the way to the toes. Most owls also have fully feathered legs. The bushier a bird of prey’s leg feathers, the more powerful it seems. Female redtails can be distinguished from males by their larger size. A wild and free bird, photographed in a Connecticut nature preserve.
