Shrub to 2m. leaves generally 5-lobed, covered with small brownish glands beneath, strong smelling. Flowers reddish-green or brownish-green, bell-shaped, 7-8mm, in long drooping racemes; sepals curved, hairy. Berry black when ripe, 12-15mm, sweetish and aromatic, with persistent sepals.\nHabitat: Wet woodland, hedgerows, fen carr and stream banks, to 1500m.\nFlowering Season: April-May.\nDistribution: Throughout Europe, but widely naturalized; possibly not truly native in much of NW Europe, but long established there.\n\nThis is a quite common Species in the described Habitats in the Netherlands.\nThe Picture is made in an Ornamental Garden.

Deciduous tree to 25m, with smooth silvery-gray bark striped with brown; trunk fluted. Leaves oval, pointed, somewhat pleated, sharply toothed, hairy on veins beneath. Catkins greenish to 5cm, with the leaves. Fruit in pendant clusters, surrounded by 3-lobed bracts; nuts small.\nFlowering Season: April-May.\nHabitat: Woods, hedgerows and scrub, occasionally pollarded, mostly in low altitudes.\nDistribution: S.
