Liberty Cap, a dormant hot spring cone, got its name because of its resemblance to the peaked caps worn during the French Revolution, known as 'liberty caps' or 'Phrygian caps.' This geological feature was named by members of the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition of 1870.
