This international landmark, as seen on the external public-facing door of the baptistery, was designed by Lorenzo Ghiberti (between 1425-1452) and is an icon of the renaissance. The reliefs represent stories from the Old Testament. The visible heads are those of prophets. The doors displayed are now a copy of the original, with those being displayed in a local museum.

However, due to the annexation of Rome to the Kingdom of Italy, the work was interrupted; it was only thanks to San Giovanni Bosco that construction could be resumed in 1880 and completed in 1887 by the architect Francesco Vespignani. East Doors (Gates of Paradise) by Lorenzo Ghiberti on Florence Baptistery (Battistero di San Giovanni) in Tuscany, Italy. These doors consist of 10 panels depicting scenes from the Old Testament and were commissioned in 1424. Once completed, they were described by Michelangelo as being fit to be the 'gates of paradise'.
