Ouidah / Whydah / Ajuda, Atlantique Department, Benin: the Portuguese Fort of Ouidah, also known as Fort São João Baptista de Ajudá, is a historic fortress located in Ouidah, Benin. Originally built in 1682 and rebuilt in1721, it served as a trade outpost, including for the transatlantic slave trade. The fort was strategically positioned to facilitate the export of enslaved Africans and the import of goods like tobacco, alcohol, and weapons. Unlike many other European forts on the West African coast, it remained under Portuguese control until 1961. Today, the restored fort houses the Ouidah Museum of History, which provides insights into the slave trade, local history, and Beninese culture.
