Gent, Belgium - April 23rd 2019: Friday Market square with the statue of Jaco van Artevelde at Gent on a spring day. The Friday market is located at the historic center of Ghent, a large city within Belgium. The name Friday market is because it's tradition that every Friday there is a market. The market square is one of the oldest squares in the city. \n\nAbout the statue: Jacob van Artevelde lived in Ghent around 1290 – and 1345). He was an important leader and man of state. He became best known as Ghent insurgent leader. When France forbade all its occupied territories from engaging with the English due to the Hundred Years War with England, Van Artevelde went against these orders and resumed the wool trade with England. For that reason, he is still seen as a folk hero in Flanders (Belgium).
