The salmon run is the time when salmon, which have migrated from the ocean, swim to the upper reaches of rivers where they spawn on gravel beds. After spawning, all Pacific salmon and most Atlantic salmon die, and the salmon life cycle starts over again.

The salmon lifecycle begins with an egg.  As the salmon move on to the Fry and Parr stage they will develop stripe patterns. These small salmon are very vulnerable. They still have a lot of growing to do before they reach maturity.

The journey is long and difficult. Many fish will fail. The path up the fish ladders is near the end of the salmon run. These fish are driven and determined to be successful. The event happens every year in Valdez, Alaska.
