Villa de Leyva, Colombia - September 13, 2014: Founded in 1572 and located at just over 7000 feet above mean sea level on the Andes Mountains, Villa de Leyva was declared a National Monument in 1954 to protect its colonial architecture and heritage. It is located in the Department of Boyaca, in the South American country of Colombia. Photo shows the church on the main plaza or square. It is the largest town square in Colombia. The maquis, or macchia, is a type of dense, evergreen shrubland found primarily in the Mediterranean region. This vegetation is characterized by hardy shrubs and small trees such as holm oak, rosemary, and juniper, which thrive in the hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters typical of Mediterranean climates. The maquis habitat is well adapted to fire, with many plants having thick bark and deep root systems to survive and regenerate after wildfires. It provides a unique and rich ecosystem for a variety of wildlife.

A little group of mountainbikers is riding uphill on a gravel road in an eroded area with blinding white sand at Andalucian Sierra Nevada which is a mountain range in the province of Granada and, a little further, Málaga and Almería in Spain. It contains the highest point of continental Spain and the third highest in Europe after the Caucasus Mountains and the Alps, Mulhacén at 3,479 metres (11,414 ft) above sea level. It is a popular tourist destination. Parts of the range have been included in the Sierra Nevada National Park. The range has also been declared a biosphere reserve.
