This legend of Budai or popularly known as Laughing Buddha emerges in the Chinese Culture.\n\nLaughing Buddha statues are perhaps one of the most loved artifacts. They are commonly seen in homes, offices, hotels, gardens, restaurants, shops, and museums and temples. They are made of wood, metal, porcelain, and stone or painted in colour and line.\n\nThe Laughing Buddha is a symbol of happiness, contentment and prosperity. He is called ‘Budai’ in Chinese. \n\nAccording to Chinese tradition, ‘Budai’ was an eccentric Chinese Zen monk who lived during the later Liang dynasty of China. He was a native of Fenghua and his Buddhist name was Qieci Chinese : Pinyin.\n\nHe was considered a man of good and loving character. Some Buddhist traditions consider him a Buddha or ‘Bodhisattva’, usually Maitreya (the future Buddha). His large protruding stomach and jolly smile have given him the common designation “Laughing Buddha”.

A striking image that showcases the grandeur of large statues at temples in Koh Samui, including the prominent figures of Buddhist and Chinese deities. These monumental sculptures stand not only as religious icons but also as masterpieces of cultural artistry, against the backdrop of Thailand's lush tropical landscape.

Vinh Trang Pagoda is the largest Buddhist temple in Tien Giang province, ranked as a national historical-cultural relic in 1984. The pagoda was built in the early 19th century by Mr. and Mrs. Bui Cong Dat. In 1894, Venerable Thich Hue Dang from Giac Lam Pagoda (Gia Dinh) became abbot and organized the construction of a great pagoda and named it Vinh Truong Pagoda. That's why people in the surrounding area still call it Vinh Trang Pagoda. In 1907, Venerable Tra Chanh Hau repaired the main hall, mixing both Asian and European architectural features. In 1930, Venerable Minh Dang completely restored the pagoda to its current appearance.
