Aerial view of the old town in Vilnius with Cathedral of the Theotokos, Lithuania
Wide angle view of a downtown district of a european city
Long ago in the middle ages, the Vilnius Cathedral was a place of pagan worship, as it was a large, archaic church where the old Baltic religion was practiced. In the thirteenth century, it was constructed into a cathedral when a king converted to Christianity. The king died and the church became a place of pagan practices once again. However, when Lithuania officially became a Christian country, this site became a Christian cathedral once again. It stands in honor of Saints Stanislaus and Ladislaus. The beautiful tower stands with the main church, whose architecture has many neoclassical elements. This means that it is a modern take on the aesthetics of Greco-Roman classic styles.

A remnant of the Upper Castle from the Middle Ages, the Gediminas' Tower stands on this iconic hill. This hill is where the Baltic Way began. Here in Vilnius, one of the longest human chains in history began as a form of peaceful protest. Approximately two million people held hands simultaneously, forming a connected line across all three of the Baltic States, from Lithuania up to Latvia and Estonia. This was a massively powerful protest for the independence of the states and it even led to the Soviet Union acknowledging their crimes against the Baltic States and the three countries gained independence as a result. This historical landmark is a powerful reminder of this inspiring movement. In the background, we see both the old town and the newer, modern buildings. We can see both the respect and protection of the old town and the advancement of the modern city since Lithuania has become a free nation.
