Longhorn Cowfish, lactoria cornuta, Adult against Black Background
Longhorn Cowfish Lactoria cornuta occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from Red Sea and East Africa to the Marquesan and Tuamoto islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe Island in a depth range from 1 to 100m, max. length 46 cm, common 40 cm. \nThe species lives on coastal muddy or sandy habitats in still bays and is commonly found in harbours and estuaries, feeding on benthic invertebrates by blowing away the sand. It's exactly what this specimen begins to do. \nCows have only front horns. The Longhorn Cowfish Lactoria cornuta has rear horns too! \nLembeh Strait, Sulawesi, Indonesia\n1°28'22.56 N 125°14'3.888 E at 17m

Thornback Cowfish Lactoria fornasini occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific from East Africa to the Hawaiian and Rapa Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe Island and in the Southeast Atlantic, sometimes reaching the southeast coast of South Africa. The solitary species occurs in a depth range from 5 to 132 m, usually from 6 to 30m, max. total length 23cm. Thornback Cowfish inhabits clear outer lagoon and seaward reefs. Males are highly territorial. \nThe 'rowing' swimming motion is achieved using their dorsal, anal, and pectoral fins, while the caudal fin is reserved for bursts of speed. \nCowfishes have the ability to secrete a toxic mucus, ostracitoxin, as a chemical defense against predators. Released under stress, this toxin dissolves in water and can harm or kill nearby marine life, including the boxfish itself in confined spaces like tidepools. While effective for predator deterrence, the toxin can temporarily disrupt local reef ecosystems. \nLembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°25'51.21 N 125°11'5.142 E at 26m depth

The Yellow Boxfish Ostracion cubicus occurs in the tropical and subtropical Indopacific in lagoon and semi-sheltered seaward reefs in a depth range from 1-280m, but usually not deeper than 50m, max. length is 45cm. \nFrom the juvenile to the adult fish there is a big change in shape and color. This cube-shaped juvenile specimen would fit easily into a walnut. He swims in front of black coral. \nThe omnivorous species feeds on marine algae, worms, crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish.\nOstracion cubicus is a solitary species considered relatively poor swimmer and for this reason, developed protection via toxin release: When stressed or injured it releases poisonous proteins from its skin that may prove lethal to any fish in the surrounding waters. The bright yellow color and black spots are a form of warning coloration (aposematism) to any potential predators. \nLembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°28'47.196 N 125°14'12.42 E at 26m depth

Bristle-Tailed Filefish Acreichthys tomentosus occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific from Sri Lanka eastward through Indonesia to New Caledonia, north to southern Japan usually in a depth range from 2 to 15m (this specimen a bit deeper), max. length 14cm. \nThe adults of the solitary species inhabit weed and rubble areas on shallow coral reefs and they are commonly found in seagrasses, feeding on amphipods, polychaetes and molluscs. \nThis juvenile specimen was encountered near a Cactus Algae. Cactus Algae or Calcareous Green Seaweed Halimeda tuna occurs on volcanic rocks at shallow intertidal to subtidal depths. Halimeda tuna is characterized by the formation of stems up to 20 cm high, formed by fragments in the form of kidney-shaped and flat discs up to 2.5 cm in diameter, linked together. The fragments are thicker at their ends and generally present calcareous incrustations. The max. size of a fragment is 25mm, a perfect reference for the size of the juvenile Filefish who probably is mimicking a fragment of Halimeda tuna. \nLembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°28'30.396 N 125°15'1.92 E at 17m depth
