Arizona doesn't have many natural ponds and lakes. To provide water for their livestock, early ranchers dug stock tanks in the national forest open range. Now that the national forests are used for recreation these old tanks provide ideal habitat for wildlife as well as popular destinations for hiking. An osprey nest is in the upper part of the picture. This unnamed tank has overflowed from the monsoon rainfalls. It is located at the base of Campbell Mesa in Coconino National Forest, Arizona, USA.

Schultz Tank is a water reservoir located in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona. Schultz Tank was originally constructed as a stock tank in the late 19th or early 20th century. Stock tanks were commonly built in the western United States to provide water for livestock, aiding ranchers in managing their herds, especially in arid regions. Over the years, Schultz Tank has also been used for various purposes, including serving as a water source for wildlife and as a recreational spot for hiking and nature observation. The tank is situated in the San Francisco Peaks area, which is known for its scenic beauty and diverse ecosystem. Schultz Tank, Schultz Peak and Schultz Pass, were named for Charles H. Schulz (original spelling), a sheep rancher who lived in the pass. Schulz was one of the earliest settlers in Flagstaff, arriving from Texas in 1880 with his herd of sheep. This photograph of Schultz Tank was taken in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
