The historic centre of Nardò has its heart in the baroque Salandra Square, characterised by several civic and religious monuments, which are really beautiful, built between the 16th and the 18th century. In the middle of the square stands the Guglia dell’Immacolata (Immacolata Steeple), 19 metres high, built in 1769 to thank her to have protected the town from the earthquake. On the column, there are the statues made of Lecce stone, representing San Giuseppe, Sant’Anna, San Gioacchino and San Domenico which frame the Immacolata. In the heart of the historic center of Nardò, Piazza Salandra has always been a meeting place par excellence and fascinates the visitor with its beautiful architecture. Piazza Salandra is one of the most beautiful squares in Puglia, not only for the Baroque buildings and the imposing column with the Spire of the Immaculate Conception but also for the charm of the places that have witnessed the life of the community for centuries.

The gold leaf on bronze statue of the Virgin Mary stands atop the Basilica Notre Dame de Fourviere, in the Fourviere district of Old Lyon. Fourvière is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated for the city of Lyon in 1998.In the middle of the 19th century, the people of Lyon inaugurated the golden Statue of the Virgin Mary. In 1848, the chapels old bell tower lost its turret, called The Needle. The architect Duboys designed the bell towers reconstruction, however, his design wasnt much appreciated. The decision was made to put a statue of the Virgin Mary on top of the new bell tower. Joseph-Hugues Fabisch won the competition and cast the statue of the Virgin statue in golden bronze. She stands 5.60 metres high -18 feet - and weighs an incredible 3 tons. The open arms pose and hands of the Virgin have been overproportioned so they can be seen from the bottom of the Fourviere hill.
