Magnolia in full bloom, North China
Magnolia is an ancient genus. Appearing before bees evolved, the flowers are theorized to have evolved to encourage pollination by beetles. The flower bud is enclosed in a bract rather than in sepals; the perianth parts are undifferentiated and called tepals rather than distinct sepals and petals.

Magnolia grandiflora, commonly called Southern magnolia or Bull bay, is a medium to large evergreen tree, growing to 10-30meters high. Native to Southeastern United States, it is now widely cultivated in warm areas around the world. Flagrant white flowers bloom in early summer (June-July), which turn into cone-like fruiting clusters that mature in late summer to early fall, releasing seeds at maturity.

It typically grows as either a 5-7 meters tall tree with a spreading, rounded crown or as a shorter, multi-stemmed shrub. It features cup-shaped, fragrant, 9-12 petaled, creamy white flowers (about 5-7cm in diameter) which appear in mid-spring. Cone-like fruits with bright red seeds mature in autumn.
