The Whetstone Mountains located in Cochise County, southeastern Arizona, are a part of the Coronado National Forest. The mountains are steep and rugged, with Apache Peak being its highest point. The foothills are covered in dense scrub, grasses, cacti, succulents, while low woody trees can be found at the higher elevations. Ancient stone jungle like an alien world

The maquis, or macchia, is a type of dense, evergreen shrubland found primarily in the Mediterranean region. This vegetation is characterized by hardy shrubs and small trees such as holm oak, rosemary, and juniper, which thrive in the hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters typical of Mediterranean climates. The maquis habitat is well adapted to fire, with many plants having thick bark and deep root systems to survive and regenerate after wildfires. It provides a unique and rich ecosystem for a variety of wildlife.

The Grapevine Mountains are a range of mountains located along the border of Inyo County, California and Nye County, Nevada. The range was named for the wild grapes in the area. The mountain range is about 22 miles long and lies in a northwest-southeasterly direction. The range reaches an elevation of 8,738 feet at Grapevine Peak, near Phinney Canyon on the Nevada side. Daylight Pass is at the southern end of the range. Most of the Grapevine Range is in Death Valley National Park, California, USA.
