It was unveiled on October 20, 1895 in memory of the help the civil population of Strassburg received from Switzerland during the Franco-Prussian war in 1870-1871. The monument was modeled by the French sculptor and painter Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904).
The image shows the Fountain of Unicorns, created in 1776. The sculptures on the fountain are struggling sea horses and unicorns and a human figure. The memorial is in honor of the Marquis de Castries for his victory in the Battle of Clostercamp in 1760. Captured during autumn season.

Sculptor Frederick MacMonnies is the author the monument. The architectural design was done by Thomas Hastings. The monument was made from Indiana Limestone and was completed in 1922.
