A number of public educational and cultural establishments, plus Pittencrieff Park are testimony to his philanthropic legacy for his home town. There are many identifiable names visible on this monument which was erected by the Association of Minor Asia and the Association of Minor Asia 'Ionia' Rethymnon. The genocide took place after The Young Turk Revolution involving the years 1914-1923 which impacted the Christian minority Pontic Greeks in Anatolia. The Young Turks wanted to 'Turkify' the Ottoman Empire and so a genocidal campaign took place against non-Turkish minorities. Between 1914-1923, about 353,000 Pontic Greeks were killed and 1.5 million were expelled.
Today it is used again as an official emblem of the modern-day municipality of Rome
