Eastern chipmunk climbing rock after emerging from its burrow in spring, when its winter hibernation ends. The eastern chipmunk is the largest of the world's 25 chipmunk species, thriving in brushy, rocky woods. Recent studies suggest that it is one of the few true hibernators. The first of its two annual breeding seasons occurs from late winter through early spring. Twenty-three other chipmunk species live in western or central North America. Only the Siberian chipmunk occurs in the Eastern Hemisphere.
