Miquelon, Miquelon Island, Saint Pierre et Miquelon: Notre-Dame-des-Ardilliers Church in Miquelon is the main religious building on the island of Miquelon in the French archipelago of Saint Pierre and Miquelon. Built entirely of wood between 1862 and 1865 to replace an earlier church, it has a rectangular plan topped with a gabled roof and a bell tower at the pediment. Inaugurated in 1865, it takes its name from Father Ardilliers and his sister, the nun of Notre-Dame-des-Ardilliers in Saumur, who contributed financially to the construction of the first church in Miquelon. Located near the port of the village of Miquelon in the north of the commune of Miquelon-Langlade, this Catholic church was consolidated at the beginning of the 20th century and has been under the jurisdiction of the diocese of La Rochelle and Saintes since 2018, following the abolition of the apostolic vicariate of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.

Saint Pierre Island, Saint Pierre et Miquelon: inland pond / bog ecosystem. The landscape is sparsely forested, with low shrubs and grasses lining the pond’s edge. The island of Saint Pierre, contains numerous bogs and marshes that are characteristic of its cool, humid maritime climate and glacially influenced terrain. These wetlands are nutrient-poor and acidic, supporting vegetation such as sphagnum mosses, sedges, dwarf shrubs, and aquatic plants like yellow pond lilies. Bogs typically occupy poorly drained depressions in the island’s interior, while marshes are found near low-lying coastal or inland areas where water flow is more variable. These ecosystems play an important ecological role by regulating water flow, storing carbon, and providing habitat for birdlife and amphibians. Although modest in scale, they reflect the subarctic biogeography of the region and remain largely undeveloped due to the island’s low population density and rugged landscape.
Saint Pierre, Saint Pierre Island, Saint Pierre et Miquelon: Catholicism is the predominant religion in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, reflecting the archipelago’s French cultural and historical roots. The territory falls under the jurisdiction of the Apostolic Vicariate of Iles Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, established in 1763 and later integrated into the Diocese of La Rochelle and Saintes in 2018. The Roman Catholic Church has historically played a central role in local life, with parish churches such as Saint-Pierre Cathedral serving as both religious and community landmarks. Religious observance has declined in recent decades, mirroring trends in mainland France, but Catholic traditions and holidays continue to shape the cultural calendar of the islands.

Measure of historic flood-heights that the River Loire has reached in the historic village of Behuard, near Angers in Maine-et-Loire. Behuard is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is unique as such in that it is the only village that stands on an island, the Ile de Behuard, in the middle of two arms of the River Loire.Behuard is a Little City of Character - Petite Cité de Caractère - a French label awarded to towns or villages that meet a set of criteria that include being subject to protection as a Historic Monument, or a Remarkable Heritage Site.Behuard has been famous since the Middle Ages for its Pilgrimage to the Virgin Mary and the church of Notre-Dame along with a sanctuary built on the orders of Louis XI. Being on an island means that Behuard frequently floods throughout the winter months. Being at the mercy of rising floodwater the medieval houses have been constructed on raised foundations None of the houses are deliberately waterproof, so that when the water flows in it is able to flow through and back out again. The flood depth indicator in the centre of the village, as seen here marks the levels of the 10 major floods of the 20th century and can be found in the centre of the village. In 1910, the Loire level nearly reached a depth of 7 metres. Other major floods occurred in 1936, 1982, 1904, 1977, 1983, 1995, 1988, 1962 and 2000.The people of Béhuard, have learnt to live with the river and know when to leave the island. As soon as the water level rises to a dangerous level -practically every year- the inhabitants organise themselves, preparing for the worst. Many of the houses have hooks on the ceilings to which they can attach their furniture to protect it from the flood waters.
