Developed by man since the 11th century, the Marais Poitevin is made up of three large groups linked to its hydraulic functioning: the maritime marsh, the dried marsh, the wet marsh. Thousands of kilometers of ditches, canals and channels dug, millions of trees planted to secure the banks, so many testimonies of a close relationship with water. This hydraulic network, the result of development that has evolved over the centuries, helps mitigate the effects of variations in seasonal precipitation: flooding in winter, drying in summer.
