Indian pipes (Monotropa uniflora), a wildflower not a mushroom, in the New England forest in midsummer. With one pendant flower on each stem, this is one of the few plants that lack chlorophyll (which makes plants green). It can live in dark forests because it needs no sunlight for photosynthesis. It survives by parasitizing certain fungi, trees and decomposing plants. Also called ghost plant.

$Sterile stems short to tall, to 80cm, sometimes sprawly green, usually with numerous whorls of relatively thick unbranched branches; ridges 6-19 on stems, 3-4 on branches. Clathrus ruber is a species of fungus in the family Phallaceae, and the type species of the genus Clathrus. It is commonly known as the latticed stinkhorn, the basket stinkhorn, or the red cage, alluding to the striking fruit bodies that are shaped somewhat like a round or oval hollow sphere with interlaced or latticed branches.
