The hill pigeon is a stout-bodied pigeon, similar in size and general appearance to the rock dove but mainly differentiated by its tail pattern which consists of a broad, white tail-band across the black tail. Other differences include a paler mantle and upper wings and a white patch on the back. In flight, the tail pattern is similar to the snow pigeon, but lacks the contrast between the head and neck in that species.

The Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) is one of the most widely distributed and abundant of all the birds of North America. It is also a prolific breeder. One pair can raise up to six broods of two chicks each in a single year. The bird is a strong flier with the wings making an unusual whistling sound. Mourning doves are a muted light grey and brown. The males and females look alike and are generally monogamous. Their diet consists almost exclusively of seeds. This mourning dove was photographed perched on a branch at Scottsdale, Arizona, USA.
