As in other niltavas, the male is brilliantly colored while the female is drab brown overall. Female is very similar to other niltavas, intermediate in size between Little and Large niltavas, with stronger warm tones on the wings and tail than Fujian Niltava. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the eastern population of the monarch as endangered. Thus this subspecies is on the IUCN Red List. The only butterfly in the world that undergoes such an extensive migration.
