This photograph was taken in the Snowy Mountains / Kosciuszko National Park in the Australian Alps. At the time of the photograph this area was named Mount Kosciusko. The re-naming to Kosciuszko is more true to its Polish roots, and was adopted in Australia in 1997. Although this is the highest mountain on the Australian mainland at over 2200 metres / 7300 feet, it is easily accessible via a five-mile walk from Charlotte Pass. The range and colour of the wildflowers are spectacular, as indicated (in a small way) in this photo. Vegetation ranges from herbfields of snow grass and snow daisies through heaths and feldmarks (plant life separated by bare, stony ground) and on to alpine bogs. Adding to the interest is evidence of glaciation among the high peaks. There are cirques, moraines, tarn lakes and roche moutonn.
