The sunset light illuminates the Altare della Patria or Vittoriano in the historic center of Rome. The Vittoriano is the Italian national monument built between the Capitoline Hill (Campidoglio) and Piazza Venezia from 1885 and 1935 in honor of the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II. Inside there is the monument to the Unknown Soldier, the National Memorial dedicated to all Italian soldiers who died in wars. The Altare della Patria is the setting for all the official Italian celebrations, in particular the National Day of the Republic on June 2 and the Liberation Day on April 25.
