Luanda, Angola: very densely packed neighborhoods, Sambizanga and Cazenga areas, with the Port of Luanda at the top. Since Angola's independence from Portugal in 1975, Luanda, the capital city, has experienced dramatic population growth and transformation. At the time of independence, Luanda's population was approximately half a million, but it surged as people fled rural areas during the Angolan Civil War (1975–2002). This rapid urbanization, driven by internal displacement and migration, led to an expansion of informal settlements and increased strain on infrastructure. Post-war stability and economic growth fuelled further population increases, with Luanda becoming a key economic hub, attracting people from across the country. By the early 2020s, Luanda's population exceeded 8 million, most living in musseques (informal settlements) making it one of Africa's fastest-growing cities, although challenges such as overcrowding, inadequate housing, and infrastructure deficits remain.
