Vatican, March 09 -- A Bernini fountain in the majestic square of St Peter's Basilica, surrounded by the colonnade designed and built by Bernini himself in 1655. Characterized by giant columns and pilasters, the immense facade of San Pietro (118 meters wide and 48 high), was conceived by the architect Carlo Maderno to complete Michelangelo's previous project and built between 1608 and 1614. The Basilica of St. Peter's is the center of the Catholic religion, one of the most visited places in the world for its immense artistic and architectural treasures. Rome, Italy - October 25, 2013: The Piazza Guglielmo Marconi. The buildings and obelisk are part of the Esposizione Universale Roma (EUR), a large business centre and residential complex outside Rome, Italy, initiated in 1935 by Benito Mussolini for the planned 1942 world exhibition and as a showcase for fascism and fascist architecture. Work on the complex was abandoned during WW2 and subsequently suffered some damage. It was completed in the 1950s and 60s, the obelisk dedicated to the radio pioneer, Marconi, being erected in 1959.
