An Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) hovering over an inlet at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in coastal Orange County, southern California. This raptor, found virtually world-wide, has been something of a puzzle to taxonomists because of several atypical anatomical features. For instance, they can move the outer toe backwards and they have horny scales on their feet, the better to catch their fishy prey. They are currently classified in a family of their own, Pandionidae.

The osprey, also known as halieto, guincho or osprey, is a species of accipitriform bird of the Pandionidae family. It is a medium-sized bird of prey, which appears on all continents, except Antarctica, although in South America it is only a migratory, non-nesting species. No

After a successful hunt, this male osprey returns home to clean this rare needle fish. The chicks cannot easily eat the bones in the fish's head and spine, so the father not only catches the food for them, but prepares it for them as well. This scene shows the aftermath of the cleaning, after the inedible parts of the fish have already been cleaned out. This photo was captured by the harbor of Huntington Beach, CA.
