Blackfin Barracuda Sphyraena qenie occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and East Africa to the central Indian Ocean and French Polynesia and in the Eastern Pacific in Mexico and Panama in a depth range from 1-100m, max. length 170cm, common 80cm. The exact range is uncertain because of confusion with Pickhandle Barracuda Sphyraena jello and Sawtooth Barracuda Sphyraena putnamae. The species is found near current-swept lagoon and seaward reefs and is usually seen in large semi-stationary schools during the day like these specimen. Blackfin Barracuda have a tendency to occupy the same site for months or even years at a time. They probably disperse at night to feed on fishes.
