Yellow rattle (Rhinanthus minor) is a hemi-parasitic wild flower. In a wildflower meadow it will help to keep grasses in check by feeding off their roots. When the seeds are ripe they rattle in their cases, making them a point of interest for a school 'nature table', and earning them the country name of 'rattle-box'. Once the seeds are ripe it is time to start hay-making, leading to the name 'hay-shackle' in Somerset. The Latin name 'Rhinanthus' means nose flower, referring to the shape created by the petals. In this photograph the flowers are scattered through the middle part of this summer meadow grassland.
