She is the heroine of the eponymous play by the dramatist Euripides ( c. 484–406 bce ). According to legend, the god Apollo helped Admetus, son of the king of Pherae, to harness a lion and a boar to a chariot in order to win Alcestis's hand.

Jeremiah was a prophet during the time of King Josiah. He warned the people about a coming judgment because of their sins. His warnings were largely ignored. God instructed him to write on a scroll a message for the people. Jeremiah and Baruch worked on that scroll, but it was later burned by Jehoiachim. Jeremiah was eventually arrested and put in prison. Upon his release, he fled to Egypt. He shared a message of hope and redemption with the exiles.
