The National Monument to Vítor Emanuel II (in Italian: Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II or Altare della Patria or Il Vittoriano) is a monument in honor of Vítor Emanuel II of Italy, the first king of unified Italy and considered the father of the Italian homeland . It is located in Rome between Piazza Venezia and Capitoline Hill having been designed by Giuseppe Sacconi in 1885. It was opened in 1911 and completed in 1935. Made of pure white marble from Botticino, Brescia, it has a majestic staircase, Corinthian columns, fountains, a huge equestrian statue of Vítor Emanuel and two statues of the goddess Victoria in quadriga. The structure is 135 m wide and 70 m high, but if quadrigas and winged victories are included, the height becomes 81 m. The base of the monument houses the museum of Italian Unification.
