It was designed by André Le Brun, the court sculptor of King Stanisław August, and the contractor was Franciszek Pinck. The monument was ceremoniously unveiled on September 14, 1788, on the 105th anniversary of the victory at Vienna.

The majestic equestrian statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, located in the center of Piazza del Campidoglio (Roman Capitol Square) on the Capitoline Hill, in the historic core of Rome. In the background, a glimpse of the facade and the bell tower of the Palazzo Senatorio, designed with the square by Michelangelo in 1534, actually seat of the Municipal Government of the Eternal City. Considered by the ancient Romans a sacred and indestructible place, the Roman Capitol has always represented one of the most symbolic places of the Roman Forums, as well as the nerve center of the entire Roman civilization. The original equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, made in gilded bronze around 180 AD, has been preserved since 1981 in the Capitoline Museums. It is the only equestrian statue of the classical era that has survived intact up to our times. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
