Dwarf pitch pine tree and cones on the summit of Mount Everett in Massachusetts, summer. This fire-resistant, ridgetop tree occurs in only a few places in the Northeast. Dwarf pitch pines in such areas can be more than 150 years old but less than 10 feet tall. At 2,602 feet, Mount Everett is the tallest mountain in the Southern Taconic Range. The Taconic Mountains extend north from eastern New York and northwest Connecticut, through western Massachusetts, into southwest Vermont.
