The Uinta Chipmunk (Neotamias umbrinus) is easily recognized by its reddish-brown fur and distinctive stripes running down its back. These stripes consist of light and dark bands, helping to camouflage the chipmunk in its Southwestern USA habitat. This species is commonly found in the Rocky Mountain Range as well as parts of the desert Southwest. In the mountains, it prefers areas with dense coniferous forests, thick brush and rocky outcroppings. The Uinta chipmunk’s diet consists mainly of seeds, berries, nuts, and insects. It plays a key role in seed dispersal, particularly for coniferous trees like pines. This Uinta Chipmunk was photographed at Phelps Lake in Grand Teton National Park near Jackson, Wyoming, USA.
