The remains of the Roman temple of the Portico D'Ottavia in the ancient Jewish Ghetto, in the historic heart of the Eternal City. According to tradition, the fish market was held in this place in ancient Rome. The iconic Jewish Quarter of Rome, the oldest ghetto in Europe, is famous for the presence of hidden alleys and small squares, where it is easy to find small restaurants of Italian and Jewish cuisine, and remarkable Roman archaeological remains. The ghetto of Rome is located in one of the oldest districts of the Eternal City, located between the Capitoline Hill or Campidoglio (Roman Capitol) and the Tiber river. The Roman Walls were constructed between 271 and 275 A.D. during the reign of Emperors Aurelian and Probus. The concrete, brick, and mortar walls were built up to 33 feet high in some places and 11 feet thick with a tower every 97 feet. A gate in the Aurelian walls built in the early 5th century by Emperor Honoius.  The gate remained closed until the early 20th century.  There is a marble relief facing Via Veneto honoring the fallen soldiers in WWI.

Rome, Italy, March 03 --  An unusual view of the historic heart of Rome and Piazza del Popolo seen from a panoramic terrace. In the background Porta del Popolo or Porta Flaminio, formerly built by the Romans along the ancient Aurelian walls. The external facade of Porta del Popolo was restructured in the 16th century at the request of Pope Pius IV based on drawings by Michelangelo. The internal facade, visible in the photo, was instead rebuilt in 1655 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Built in 1823 in neoclassical style by the architect and urban planner Giuseppe Valadier, Piazza del Popolo is one of the most iconic places in the Eternal City. In the center, the large fountain with the Egyptian obelisk already present in the square since 1589, transported to Rome by the Emperor Augustus for the Circus Maximus, and which Valadier embellishes at the corners with the marble statues of four lions. On the right, the domes of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, famous for two paintings by Caravaggio and numerous works by Raphael and Pinturicchio.
