A gentoo penguin parent is looking after a recently hatched chick at a colony on the Antarctic Peninsula.
Antarctica is a continent capped by an inland ice sheet up to 4.8km thick, containing approximately 90 percent of the world's total surface fresh water and 60 percent of the world's total fresh water. The ice sheet is so heavy that it has pushed the land below sea level in places.

The penguins in their natural habitat in Antarctica
The gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) is a penguin species (or possibly a species complex) in the genus Pygoscelis, most closely related to the Adélie penguin (P. adeliae) and the chinstrap penguin (P. antarcticus).
As the snow falls, a nesting gentoo penguin cares for her days old chicks in her rocky nest on Aitcho Island in the South Shetlands Islands, Antarctica.

The Yellow-eyed Penguin (Megadyptes antipodes) or Hoiho is a penguin native to New Zealand. Previously thought closely related to the Little Penguin (Eudyptula minor), molecular research has shown it more closely related to penguins of the genus Eudyptes. Like most other penguins, it is mainly piscivorous.
