Abandoned radar tower seen above trees at Camp Hero State Park, Montauk, Long Island, New York. The camp was used in World War II and during the Cold War. The radar tower was used as part of the United States' defense system during the cold war. Camp Hero is rumored to be the location where secret government experiments were carried out on juvenile boys. The camp was operated by the United States Army, and later was operated by the United States Air Force. The camp was commissioned by the United States Army in 1942, and it was originally disguised as a fishing village. The United States Air Force closed the camp in 1981. When the camp was closed the large high-powered radar reflector was left in place due to the difficulty in removing it. It was 126 feet (38m) long and 38 feet (12m) tall, and weighed 40 tons (over 3,600kg). It is fenced off from public access, and is now in a state of serious disrepair.
