Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand currently terminates 19 km  from the Tasman Sea. Near the end of the last ice age about 18,000 years ago it extended to the present-day coastline or even beyond. It is a popular tourist attraction.

The old Northern State Hospital ruins, now part of the Northern State Recreation Area just north of Seattle. Opened in 1912 the hospital once housed the most mentally ill patients in the state. The grounds also encompassed a 700 acre full function farm, it was officially closed in 1973. In 1991 Skagit County purchased the land and transformed it into a recreation area for the public.

Stanley, East Falkland, Falkland Islands: British Antarctic Survey (BAS) Falkland Islands Office on Ross Road - BAS is a component of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). NERC is part of UK Research and Innovation. BAS is the United Kingdom's national polar research institute. It has a dual purpose, to conduct polar science, enabling better understanding of global issues, and to provide an active presence in the Antarctic on behalf of the UK. Most of the BAS staff travelling to and from Antarctica transit through Stanley each Antarctic summer. Antarctic mail and the majority of freight transits through the Falkland Islands.
