Ficaire en fleur au début du printemps
The Latin name of the lesser celandine (Ranunculus ficaria) describes this short yellow spring flower as related to buttercups. It grows early as the year starts to warm up, yet mostly favours shady spots. The number of petals is very variable, with eight being typical. A new scientific name exists for this plant, Ficaria verna.

Marsh marigolds, horizontal. Early spring on a Connecticut riverbank.
Two yellow wildflowers
Caltha palustris, commonly called Marsh marigold, is a rhizomatous perennial of the Buttercup family that is native to stream margins, marshes, swamps and wet meadows. The common name, marsh marigold, is only descriptively accurate as to this plant’s habitat, because it neither looks like, nor is related to, marigolds, which is Aster family. It typically grows 12-18” tall on hollow, branching stems. Bright yellow flowers with 5-9 deep yellow petal-like sepals bloom in winter and spring (February to June).

Lesser celandine (Ranunculus ficaria), a spring time yellow wildflower that is found typically in UK woodlands. The individuals in this single clump are connected at the roots, which is why they all have eight petals. I have seen as many as 13 petals on a lesser celandine flower.
