The rooftops of Rome with the National Monument of the Altare della Patria, the ancient Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli and the Palazzo Senatorio (left) on the Capitoline Hill or Campidoglio, in the historic heart of Rome. Considered the sacred hill of ancient Rome, the Campidoglio is currently the seat of the Town Hall and the city government. The Altare della Patria, or Vittoriano, was built in 1885 in neoclassical style in honor of the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II near the Roman Forum, between the north side of the Capitoline Hill (Campidoglio) and the central Piazza Venezia. Inside is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a War Memorial dedicated to all the Italian soldiers who died in the war. The Altare della Patria is the scene of all the official Italian civic celebrations, in particular the Republic Day on June 2 and the Liberation Day on April 25. The Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli or simply the church of Aracoeli is one of the oldest churches in Rome, built starting from the sixth century on the ruins of the Temple of Juno. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Image in 16x9 and high definition format.
