A glimpse of the Palazzo del Quirinale (Quirinal Palace) in the historic heart of Rome seen from the gardens of the Carlo Alberto public park. On the left, the bronze equestrian statue of King Carlo Alberto of Savoy, created in 1899 by the sculptor Raffaello Romanelli. The Quirinal Palace is currently the official seat of the President of the Italian Republic, elected every seven years by the Italian Parliament. Built in neoclassical style on the Quirinal hill between 1573 and 1583 as the summer residence of Pope Gregory XIII, this palace over the centuries has been the residence of the Popes (1605-1870), the residence of the King of Italy (1871-1946) and official seat of the Presidency of the Republic (from 1946 to today). Some of the most important Italian architects and artists participated in its construction and decoration, including Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Carlo Maderno, Guido Reni and Domenico Fontana. The Quirinal Palace, with an extension of 110,000 square meters, is the sixth largest building in the world. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
