The bell tower and the dome of the majestic Duomo, in the heart of the medieval city of Siena, in Tuscany, central Italy. The construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, was completed between 1215 and 1370, becoming one of the religious architectural masterpieces of the Romanesque and Italian Gothic style. Inside, the Sienese cathedral preserves countless artistic masterpieces created by Nicola Pisano and his son Giovanni, Michelangelo Buonarroti, the Pinturicchio, Donatello, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini, just to name a few of the best known. Siena is one of the most beautiful Italian cities of art, in the heart of the Tuscan hills, famous for its immense artistic and historical heritage and for the Palio, where the seventeen old districts of the city compete every year in Piazza del Campo in one of the oldest horse racing in the world. The unfinished structure of the new cathedral on the right side of the Duomo in the medieval heart of Siena, in Tuscany. The construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral or Duomo dedicated to the Assumption of Mary was completed between 1215 and 1348, becoming one of the religious architectural masterpieces of the Romanesque and Italian Gothic style. But in 1339 it was decided to expand the Cathedral, leaving the existing structure as a transept of the new construction. Unfortunately the new and larger cathedral was not completed and the structure of the unfinished main nave (in the photo) is today called the Duomo Nuovo. Siena is one of the most beautiful Italian cities of art, in the heart of the Tuscan hills, famous for its immense artistic and historical heritage and for the Palio, where the seventeen historical districts of the city compete every year in Piazza del Campo in one of the oldest horse racing in the world. Built in 1290 as the seat of the Council of Nine and of the executive power of the city, the majestic Palazzo Pubblico is still the seat of the municipal government. The Cappella di Piazza (Chapel of the Square), located on the left side of the palace, is a marble tabernacle in Gothic style built in 1352 in honor of the Virgin Mary for having saved the city from the plague of 1348. Center of the city life since 1169, Piazza del Campo or simply Campo is one of the most beautiful and famous squares in the world for its particular shell shape. In this space every year the seventeen historical neighborhoods of Siena compete in the Palio, one of the oldest horse races in the world.
