Eastern dobsonfly (female) on fence post of deck, with finger to show the large size of this insect. Her hooked jaws can inflict a painful bite. The aquatic larva of the dobsonfly, known as a hellgrammite, is also large and intimidating, and can catch prey as large as small fish. Most active at night, the adult may fly toward lights. Larvae burrow shallowly in fine substrates with relatively high concentrations of organic matter.\nFlight Season:\nLate and protracted, compared with other Gomphus species, from early June to early October, with maximum emergence in June and July.\n\nThis is a scarce Gomphus Species along the large Dutch Rivers. This Picture is made along the River Waal, near “Slot Loevestein” in the Province of Gelderland.$
