A suggestive evening view of Piazza del Popolo seen from the Pincio terrace (Pincio Gardens), in the historic heart of Rome. The terrace of the Pincio, one of the most visited and loved places in Rome, is the culmination of the west side of Villa Borghese, the public park considered the green lung in the heart of the Italian capital. The Pincio overlooks the famous Piazza del Popolo, an elliptical esplanade in neoclassical style by the Roman architect and urban planner Giuseppe Valadier who in 1816 redesigned this ancient square by creating a large central fountain and relocating an Egyptian obelisk that was transported to Rome from the emperor Augustus to embellish the Circus Maximus, already present in this square since 1589. On the left the two twin baroque churches of Santa Maria in Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. The Capitoline Hill (Latin: Collis Capitolinus pronounced, between the Forum and the Campus Martius, is one of the seven hills of Rome. By the 16th century, Capitolinus had become Campidoglio in the Roman dialect. The English word capitol derives from Capitoline. The Capitoline contains few ancient ground-level ruins, as they are almost entirely covered up by Medieval and Renaissance palaces (now housing the Capitoline Museums) that surround a piazza, a significant urban plan designed by Michelangelo.
