This is the rectangular Terrace of Marcus Nonius Balbus, which contains his statue overlooking a platform / altar. Marcus Nonius Balbus was a high-ranking ruler of the provinces of Crete and Cyrene, and he was honoured in Herculaneum where it seems that he distributed his largesse. On his death he was made patron of the town.
